What kind of leader are you?

Answer honestly about how you would actually handle a team, a deadline, and a tough call, not how you think a leader is supposed to act. Your strongest pattern is your style.

What this quiz looks at

How you set direction

Whether you lead with a big-picture reason people can buy into, or with the concrete next step in front of them.

How you develop people

How much of your attention goes to growing the people around you, rather than only to getting the work done.

How you make decisions

Whether you decide quickly on your own, or gather input first and build agreement the team owns.

How you handle pressure

What you reach for when a team stalls or a crisis hits: taking control, steadying people, or lifting the energy.

The standards you set

How high you set the bar, and whether you lead by example or by making the expectation explicit.

What is the Leadership Style Quiz?

The Leadership Style Quiz is a free PopTypes test that reveals what kind of leader you are, based on how you set direction, develop people, and make decisions rather than on job titles. You get one of six leadership styles, each with a full profile, strengths, and growth notes. Your leadership style is not about seniority or a title; it is the pattern in how you naturally guide people, set direction, and handle decisions. Two people in the same role can lead in completely different ways, and each style has situations where it shines. This quiz looks past what your business card says and focuses on how you actually show up when a group needs someone to steer, so the result reflects your instincts rather than your position. It works whether you already manage a team or you are just starting to think about how you lead. The result is meant to be practical and shareable, something you can actually use with your team rather than a score to file away.

How does this quiz find your leadership style?

Every answer adds points toward one leadership style. Across 15 questions, PopTypes tallies which style shows up most, and your highest-scoring style becomes your result. A fixed tie-break keeps the same answers giving the same style. There are no right or wrong answers, and you do not need any leadership training to take it. Answer based on how you really tend to act, not how you think a leader is supposed to behave, and you will get a more useful result. Because the scoring stays consistent, the same answers always produce the same style, so you can retake it after a new role or a hard project to see whether your instincts have shifted. Checking in every so often is a useful habit, since the way you lead often changes as you take on new responsibilities and work with different kinds of people.

What are the six leadership styles?

The six styles are Visionary (sets direction), Coach (develops people), Connector (builds relationships), Collaborator (builds consensus), Driver (sets high standards), and Commander (decides fast). They are adapted from the six leadership styles Daniel Goleman described in his Harvard Business Review article Leadership That Gets Results (2000). Each one leads in its own way. The Visionary sets a clear, motivating direction and gets people to buy into a bigger picture. The Coach develops people, investing time to help them grow rather than just getting tasks done. The Connector leads through relationships, building trust and keeping a team close and motivated. The Collaborator draws out everyone's input and builds decisions the whole team owns. The Driver sets a high bar and leads by example, pulling strong performance out of a capable team. The Commander takes charge and makes fast, clear calls, which is exactly what a team needs in a crisis. Most people lead with one, borrow from a second, and use all six at different moments.

Is this a real leadership assessment?

It is inspired by Goleman's widely cited six-style framework and written for self-reflection and fun. It is not a certified leadership assessment or a hiring, clinical, or professional evaluation tool, and most good leaders flex between several of these styles. The best leaders are not locked into one approach; they read the situation and switch. A calm project may call for the Coach or Collaborator, while a crisis may call for the Commander. Use your result as a starting point: notice which style you default to, where it serves you well, and which of the others you could lean on more when the moment calls for something different. Sharing it with your team can also open an easy conversation about how each of you prefers to lead and be led.
